HUNTING SEASON PROPOSALS WILL GO THROUGH AS IS – UNLESS CHANGES ARE MADE BY COMMISSIONERS TOMORROW
Despite receiving overwhelming public opposition to the proposed increases in wolf hunting quotas, including in Hunt Areas 8, 9, 10, and 11, where a newly formed wolf pack has become a favorite among wildlife watchers and a boon to the local economy, the Wyoming Game and Fish Department has chosen to keep the elevated quotas in place. This decision comes in direct defiance of the vast majority of public comments, which urged the Department to protect this visible and economically beneficial wolf pack. By maintaining high quotas, the Department risks the likely destruction of this pack, ignoring the ecological, economic, and public values at stake.
Similarly, in the case of mountain lion hunting, the Department received 151 public comments on the proposed increase in quotas, with only about three expressing support, yet it made no changes to the original proposal. Once again, the voices of constituents were disregarded in favor of pushing forward an agenda that aligns more closely with special interest groups than with the will of the public. The Wyoming Game and Fish Department’s refusal to adjust its plans in response to such clear and unified opposition demonstrates a troubling pattern of ignoring public input and eroding public trust in the state’s wildlife management process.
The Wyoming Game and Fish Commission has the ability to make changes to the proposed regulations at their meeting tomorrow. We sincerely hope they can demonstrate that voices other than special interests matter.
We are excited to once again be participating in the statewide day of giving known as WyoGives. We have been a participant since the first annual day of giving and we have enjoyed getting to know people across the state from this day. Please consider a gift to WWA through WyoGives as there are matching funds from Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Wyoming and other private foundations. The more you give, the more Wyoming’s wildlife gets!
